Changuu Private Island Paradise
Changuu Private Island Paradise is a luxurious tropical getaway superbly located on a Zanzibar islet, that itself has a lot of history in its truly exotic character. Changuu Private Island Paradise is built on renovated historical buildings. In the 1860s, the island served as a prison for rebellious slaves then in the 1890s the first British Prime Minister, Lloyd Mathews purchased it for the Zanzibar Government to use as a prison. The prison facilities were finished by 1894, but no inmates were ever brought. It was then designated as a quarantine area for ships docking at any East Africa port, specifically for yellow fever. The idea was however rendered impractical given that ships typically arrived to the East Africa coast between December and March, rendering the facilities useless for the rest of the year. It underwent many changes until recently when the buildings were renovated and a resort built on the island.
The Prison ruins have now been converted into a bright living structure, offering a host of entertainment facilities, such as a boutique and library. The Mathews Restaurant is an artfully restored building that was erected in the late 1890s; its wide veranda, enjoying the invigorating sea breeze, overlooks the irresistible swimming-pool at which fresh water is available for the first time in the history of this islet. This awesome renovation has been achieved whilst maintaining the perfect balance between nature and culture.
15 exclusive cottages built in the north-west of the island offer an unrivaled, luxurious experience; and in the south-west side of the island, the former Quarantine Area built in 1931 has been converted into 12 elegant sea facing rooms. Prison Island offers two room categories, all in close proximity to the sea. The cottages are built in local materials and topped with traditional thatched roofs, achieving cool atmosphere day and night.
The spacious interiors are elegantly decorated and equipped with mosquito nets and ensuite bathrooms, all with 2 al fresco showers and bathtub.
The private outdoor verandas face out to the sea, maximizing the views and sounds of the Ocean.
